Build a CharBOOterie Board for Halloween

Halloween entertaining doesn't have to mean a board filled with candy. This CharBOOterie Board combines colorful fruit, vegetables, cheese, charcuterie, and a few spooky details for a spread that's festive without being overly themed

I created this board using a mix of familiar favorites and unusual seasonal fruit, including several finds from Melissa's Produce Freaky Fruit collection. During Halloween season, look for Freaky Fruit displays at participating grocery stores for unexpected colors, shapes, and textures to add to your own board.

BEHIND THE PLATE

Start with a few larger or more unusual fruits to anchor the board, then build around them with a combination of fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, charcuterie, dips, and crunchy additions.

For this board, I used fruits such as dragon fruit, passion fruit, star fruit, pomegranate, grapes, kiwi, and citrus. Cutting some of the fruit open makes the board even more interesting by showing off the different colors and textures inside. Add savory elements to balance all of the fruit. Salami, cheese, hummus or another dip, fresh vegetables, and nuts give guests plenty to choose from and turn the board into more than a fruit platter.

Rather than trying to make everything look Halloween-themed, use a few simple details to transform the board. Mini pumpkins, skeletons, spiders, and candy eyeballs tucked between the food add just enough of a spooky element without taking over the entire spread.

BEHIND THE EXPERIENCE

A grazing board works especially well for entertaining because guests can help themselves throughout the gathering. There’s no need to assemble individual appetizers, and the board can be prepared before everyone arrives.

For Halloween, have fun with the presentation. Use unusual fruit as part of the decoration, fill in open spaces with grapes, nuts, or vegetables, and add the Halloween pieces last. The result is a colorful centerpiece that gives everyone something to explore while they snack.
